Today, it’s time to dive a bit deeper into the practice that’s at the heart of everything I do at Wessex Wise Woman: breathwork.
Now, don’t let the fancy name fool you — breathwork is very simple, but it’s truly powerful stuff. It’s been around for thousands of years, used in all sorts of spiritual traditions to tap into deeper levels of consciousness and healing. Pretty nifty, eh?
So, What’s All This Breathwork Stuff About?
At its core, breathwork is just you taking control of your breathing patterns. When you get the hang of it, you’re unlocking an ancient key to:
- Giving stress the boot: Deep, intentional breathing tells your body it’s time to chill out.
- Clearing the chaos: Your mind quiets down, making room for those “aha!” moments.
- Letting go of emotional baggage: Your breath acts like a bridge, connecting your conscious mind with those deeper, often hidden feelings.
- Getting spiritual: Breathwork creates a bit of sacred space where you can tune into your inner voice and the wisdom of the universe.
An Easy Breathwork Exercise to Kick-Start Your Day
This week, why not give this morning breathing practice a go? It’ll energize your body and clear your mind for the day ahead:
- Find a comfy seat where your spine’s straight but relaxed.
- Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of 4, imagining fresh, vibrant energy filling you up.
- Breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of 6, letting go of any tension or stagnant energy.
- Do this 8-10 times, or however many feels right for you.
As you’re doing this, focus on how it feels when the breath fills your lungs, expands your chest, and grounds you in the here and now. Let each exhale be like taking out the rubbish – getting rid of what you don’t need anymore.
Why Should You Give a Toss About Breathwork?
As women, especially those of us navigating the rollercoaster of midlife, (don’t get me started), it’s too easy to lose touch with our bodies and that inner wisdom we all have. Breathwork is a brilliant way to reconnect—to tap into that intuition and strength that’s always been there, just waiting for us to notice it.
Every breath is a chance to get back in tune with who you really are, and the best part? You can do it anywhere, anytime. Whether you’re stressed at work, overwhelmed at home, or just looking for a bit of clarity, turning to your breath is like giving yourself a big, comforting hug.
Food for Thought:
- When was the last time you actually paid attention to your breathing?
- How does it feel when you slow down and take a proper deep breath?
- Is there a particular time of day when you notice your breathing gets a bit shallow or tight?
It’d be brilliant if you could take a few minutes each day to mull over these questions and have a go at the breathwork exercise above. Before you know it, you’ll start noticing little changes in your energy, your mood, and how you’re feeling overall. I promise.
