Summer Solstice: A Reality Check (Not a Ritual)

A Summer Solstice Ritual That Actually Makes Sense
A Summer Solstice Ritual for Reconnection and Renewal

If you’re looking for a summer solstice ritual that doesn’t involve elaborate ceremonies , special equipment, or require you to become a Celtic priestess overnight, you’ve found it. This honest, 20-minute practice helps you reconnect and reset on the longest day of the year.

Right, so it’s almost the summer solstice (21st June, if you’re keeping track). The longest day of the year. Maximum daylight. Peak everything.

And if you’re anything like me, you might be thinking: “Great, another thing I’m supposed to do something meaningful about.”

Don’t worry. I’m not about to tell you to dance naked around a fire (though if that’s your thing, crack on). Unlike most summer solstice ritual guides, this isn’t about elaborate ceremonies. But there is something rather lovely about pausing for a moment when the natural world hits its annual high note.

Why This Day Actually Matters

Why This Day Actually Matters (Beyond Instagram Posts)

Here’s the thing about the solstice: it’s a true turning point. We’ve been building up to this moment of maximum light since December, and after today, we start the slow slide back towards winter. It’s like nature’s own “peak and pivot” moment.

And if you’ve been feeling a bit scattered lately (hello, fellow members of the Mental Junk Drawer Club), this might be exactly the reality check you need. If you’re drawn to working with seasonal energy throughout the year, you might also enjoy exploring seasonal breathwork practices that help you align with nature’s rhythms.

The summer solstice ritual basically uses the natural energies and asks: “Right then, what’s actually happening in your life? What’s working? What isn’t? And what do you want to do about it?”

No pressure to have profound answers. Sometimes “I need to stop checking my phone every five minutes” is the most revolutionary insight you can have.

A Simple Way to Mark the Day

A Simple Way to Mark the Day (No Complex Ritual Required)

Look, you don’t need to perform an elaborate ceremony. You don’t need special equipment or to burn sage or wear white linen (unless that makes you happy, in which case, fill your boots).

Here’s your summer solstice ritual — what you actually need. Basically, it requires about 20 minutes, somewhere you won’t be interrupted, and the willingness to be honest with yourself.

Step 1: Actually Stop Moving

Sit down somewhere comfortable. Put your phone on silent. Take three proper breaths. The kind where you actually feel your lungs expand, not those shallow panic breaths we all do most of the time.

Let yourself arrive in your own body. Novel concept, I know.

Step 2: Check In Without Judgement

Put one hand on your chest, one on your tummy. Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 6. Do this about 5 times.

While you’re breathing, ask yourself:

  • What’s actually been good about this year so far?
  • What am I genuinely proud of? (Even if it seems small)
  • What’s been weighing me down that I’m ready to stop carrying?

No need to solve everything. Just notice what comes up.

Step 3: The Letting Go Bit

This is where people usually tell you to write things down and burn them in a ceremonial fire. Which is lovely if you want to, but really, sometimes just breathing out with intention is enough.

Think of something you’re ready to release — a worry, a habit, that grudge you’ve been nursing since March. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, imagine breathing it out of your system.

Sometimes the most powerful ritual is simply saying: “Right, I’m done with this now.”

Step 4: What Actually Matters

Hand back on your heart. Breathe normally. Ask yourself: What do I actually want for the rest of this year?

Not what you should want. Not what would look good on social media. What would make you feel more like yourself.

Maybe it’s simpler than you think. Maybe it’s “I want to feel less rushed” or “I want to remember what I actually enjoy.”

After You’re Done: Don’t Overthink It

Go outside if you can. Feel the sun on your face. Drink some water. Maybe walk barefoot on grass if that sounds good to you.

The point isn’t to emerge transformed like a butterfly from a cocoon. The point is to remember that you’re allowed to pause, take stock, and choose what comes next.

The Real Magic

The Real Magic

The solstice isn’t asking you to become a different person. It’s just reminding you that you get to choose how you show up for the rest of the year.

You don’t need to wait for a new year to hit reset. You can do it on the longest day, in the middle of June, just because it feels right.

And if you’d like some company while you figure out what “showing up as yourself” actually looks like, come join us for the Summer Solstice Breathwork Session. Because sometimes the best insights come when you’re breathing with other people who also occasionally need reminding of who they are underneath all the doing. Remember: You don’t have to earn your right to take up space. You just have to remember you already do.
