Why Every Witch Should Know About Magical Correspondences

Why Every Witch Should Know About Magical Correspondences

And How My Grimoire Helped Me Weave Them Into My Practice

A Sacred Guardian Exclusive

When I first joined a local coven, one of the very first things I was asked to do was start my own grimoire. A sacred book — part journal, part reference — filled with all my magical learnings. It wasn’t something handed to me; it was something I had to grow into. Page by page, season by season.

And one of the first things I added?
A Table of Correspondences.

what are magical correspondences

So… what are magical correspondences?

Correspondences are the building blocks of witchcraft. They are the symbols, energies, and associations that help us connect the physical world with the spiritual. When we know that lavender calms, that the colour green calls in abundance, or that Thursdays carry the energy of expansion and luck, we begin to weave our magic with intention.

It’s not about memorising endless charts.
It’s about building relationship with the natural world and the energies that flow through it.

Why do correspondences matter

Why do correspondences matter?

Witchcraft isn’t just waving a wand and hoping for the best. It’s about working in alignment — with the seasons, the moon, the elements, the energies of place and time. Knowing your correspondences allows you to craft rituals, spells, and daily practices that are rooted in meaning.

When I set up my altar, I don’t just pick a colour or a crystal at random. I think about:

  • What energy am I calling in?
  • What part of the cycle am I in?
  • What support do I need?

And then I choose tools, herbs, colours, and symbols that align with that intention. It’s both practical and deeply personal.

My Grimoire - A Living Chart of Magical Connections

My Grimoire: A Living Chart of Magical Connections

As I moved through the Wheel of the Year — through Sabbats and Esbats — I began adding to my chart. Deities I felt drawn to. Flowers in bloom. Crystals that called to me. The scent of the air, the pull of the moon.

I also learnt about the traditional Wiccan ritual tools — the athame, chalice, wand, and pentacle — and how each one corresponds to an element and aspect of the self. I didn’t just write down what they were; I learned why they mattered.

Start With What You Know (and Love)

Start With What You Know (and Love)

If you’re beginning your own magical journey, or just want to deepen your connection to your practice, I can’t recommend creating your own correspondence chart enough. Start simple. One element. One herb. One colour. Let it grow with you.

Because ultimately, that’s what witchcraft is: a living, breathing relationship with the world around you.
